Office of the Vice President of Zimbabwe Honourable J.T.R Mujuru (Mrs) MP.

Projects Spearheaded by the Vice President

In the year 2000, the Government of Zimbabwe embarked on the land reform programme to correct historical imbalances in land ownership which, until then, was skewed in favour of the minority.

His Excellency, the President Cde R.G. Mugabe championed the land reform programme to empower the majority who until then equally needed land for commercial use.

To complement His Excellency’s vision, the Government’s thrust is now to ensure that the empowered farmers put the land allocated to them to good use in order increase productivity, in view of the fact that agriculture has always been the backbone of Zimbabwe’s means of sustenance.

Size does matter when producing butternuts in Cashel Valley.

In light of the necessity to economically emancipate the majority, coupled with the passion to improve the quality of life of Zimbabweans, the Vice President Hon J.T.R. Mujuru has initiated and is spearheading various empowerment programmes aimed at attaining food self sufficiency and security from household to national level.

It is acknowledged that sustainable empowerment programmes need support from both the public and private sectors. In this regard, the current projects being implemented through the Vice President’s Office have a strong public- private-participation component.

It is very pleasing to note that the corporate world responded positively by rendering financial, seed capital and in some cases meeting recurrent expenditure obligations.

Meanwhile, repeated droughts experienced by Zimbabwe over the years due to changing weather patterns in Southern Africa and world over, have proved to be a drawback.

This has seen a decline in agriculture’s contribution to Gross Domestic Product over the years. Likewise, the low productivity in this sector is negatively affecting downstream industries that depend on agriculture for raw materials.

To counter the effects of the continued dry spell, it has become absolutely necessary for agricultural activities to be independent of rainfall received in a particular year by enhancing water harvesting and irrigation development.

Under this initiative, the focus is on dam construction, irrigation development and rehabilitation.

To this end, the Vice President is grateful to all the individuals and corporate bodies that not only appreciated and developed faith in her vision but also embarked on the long and tedious journey of translating her dreams, vision as well as Government’s thrust into tangible deliverables.
